Why Antonio Conte Left Tottenham Hotspur And Who Will Replace Him

It was announced on Sunday evening that Antonio Conte was relieved from his duties as Tottenham Hotspur manager, and we take a deeper look at the situation.

Conte was appointed as Spurs manager in November 2021 following the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo, but his time at the club will certainly be deemed as a failure on all accounts.

Tottenham’s first match without Conte is away to Everton next Monday in the English Premier League. Check out the hundreds of markets we’re offering at Bet9ja.

Why did he leave?

It is not a great surprise that Italian manager Conte has departed from Spurs, due to his comments after the draw against Southampton which described the players as “selfish”.

After the Southampton draw, evidently there was a final nail in the coffin as he went on to criticise the club’s culture over the past 20 years, so Daniel Levy was left which little choice but to let him go.

There were hints throughout his reign that suggested he did not have the best relationship with chairman Levy, after some of the signings made during his time at the club were deemed to have been out of his control.

Spurs currently sit fourth place in the Premier League, but are out of all cup competitions and if Newcastle United get success from their games in hand, then they will inevitably climb above them.

Who will replace Conte?

Thomas Tuchel was one of the managers linked to replace Conte, but Bayern Munich acted swiftly and opted to sack Julian Nagelsmann in order to get the German boss in the door.

Since then, Nagelsmann has been rumoured to be the front runner to get the Spurs job but faces strong competition from well-respected managers across Europe.

Mauricio Pochettino departed the club in 2019, and he is currently out of a job. The Argentine might feel like he has unfinished business in North London after he finished runners up with the club in the 2016/17 campaign, but the Spurs faithful could well be thinking that they need a fresh start.

Conte’s assistant coach Cristian Stellini will step up as interim boss until the end of the season with 10 games left to play, so if he impresses during this period, he might be given the opportunity to take on the role permanently come the summer.
