Here’s what we learned after the first weekend of English Premier League football, and who is leading the Bet9ja FPL after week one.
Scandinavian Excellence
Manchester City’s Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland has been selected by over 90% of all teams, and for good reason. He scored two goals out of nothing against Burnley on Friday night on the way to a 3-0 win, but Alexander Isak matched this performance for Newcastle against Aston Villa on Saturday evening as The Magpies put 5 goals past Aston Villa
Isak and Haaland face off against each other this weekend and will both be looking to add to their opening day braces – Sweden’s Isak is the most transferred in player this gameweek, with many FPL players hoping he continues his form.
De Bruyne’s Injury Nightmare
Kevin De Bruyne has been the league’s assist king over recent years, but is likely to be out for months with a recurrence of a hamstring issue that ended his UEFA Champions League final early last season. This will be a massive blow for City and maybe even Erling Haaland, who relied on the Belgian for so many assists last year.
De Bruyne is top of the transferred out list along with Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings who sustained long term ACL injuries.
This week’s leaderboard
Manchester United’s defence wins big
Goalkeeper André Onana and defenders Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka won nine, 14 and 12 points respectively, putting them right at the top of the leaderboards after this weekend. All three players kept a clean sheet, with Varane and Wan-Bissaka getting a goal and assist.
However, despite these three players looking like a strong investment based on points and individual performances alone, Manchester United looked far from their best against Wolverhampton Wanderers. United could have gone behind on a number of occasions – their midfield looked vulnerable to counter attacks and Onana was very lucky to not conceded a penalty when he made a poorly timed challenge in the last minute.
United play Tottenham Hotspur this weekend at White Hart Lane. Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich has obviously left a huge hole in their attack, but Spurs still managed to net twice away to Brentford and will fancy their chances under Ange Postecoglou to put the ball in the back of the net against The Red Devils.
