As the new 2024/25 English Premier League season approaches, fans and pundits alike are speculating on who will win the league, qualify for Europe and also who will struggle to avoid the drop. The last campaign saw all three newly promoted sides drop straight back into the EFL Championship, finishing as clearly the worst three teams in the league with at least a six-point gap to safety.
The question ahead of this campaign is whether all three promoted teams will once again fail to avoid the drop in their first attempt, or if already established Premier League sides will fall to relegation.
In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at the favourites to go down in this upcoming season, analysing all the most likely contenders:
Leicester City to be relegated, 1.40 – 6VD255V – BET HERE!
Leicester City may have been promoted as the champions of the EFL Championship last season, beating Ipswich Town by a point to the title, but they are the clear favourites to go straight back down this campaign.
They have already lost last season’s manager Enzo Maresca to Chelsea, with star player Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also joining him in London, replacing the Italian with former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, who has often struggled in the Premier League.
Leicester have also lost striker Kelechi Iheanacho, Dennis Praet and Marc Albrighton, three players who all have Premier League experience, and brought in youngsters that are unproven at the top level in Issahaku Fatawu, Caleb Okoli and Michael Golding.
These losses to the squad and very few experienced or proven additions make it understandable why Leicester City are the favourites to be relegated this season, and we can see them falling straight back down.
Ipswich Town to be relegated, 1.75 – 6VD762H – BET HERE!
Phenomenal back-to-back promotions under Kieran McKenna has earned them a place in the top flight for the first time since 2001/02, but they are the second favourite to be relegated this campaign.
While they have appeared to recruit well ahead of the season, signing Omari Hutchinson, Jacob Greaves, Liam Delap, Arijanet Muric and Ben Johnson, very few of them have Premier League experience, and those that do have very limited minutes. Alongside a squad that still carries players from their time in League One and Ipswich could struggle to avoid the drop this season.
Southampton to be relegated, 2.35 – 6VD7R8L – BET HERE!
Similarly to last season, Southampton join their newly-promoted counterparts as the three favourites to be relegated this campaign.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn .Downes have been re-signed after a positive Championship campaign, while youngsters Ronnie Edwards and Nathan Wood have also joined the club. The star signing is Yukinari Sugawara from AZ Alkmaar, a full-back with experience of competing in both the Europa League and Europa Conference League.
The main concern for Southampton will be their lack of strikers coming into this campaign, with Che Adams leaving on a free while their current forward options have either limited experience in the top flight or have struggled in previous attempts. While they could make a forward addition to their squad prior to the beginning of the season, at this current time it is understandable that they are among the top three favourites to go down.
Everton to be relegated, 2.70 – 6VD7PCL – BET HERE
After three consecutive seasons of finding themselves in a relegation battle, Everton are once again tipped to be fighting for their place in the Premier League in the upcoming campaign.
Despite finishing comfortably 14 points above the relegation zone last season, as well as being deducted eight points that would have seen them 22 points clear, Everton remain on shaky ground heading into the new campaign. Sean Dyche’s side may have boasted one of the best defensive records in the league, conceding fewer goals than all but the top three teams, but their worrying offensive record, only one team scoring fewer than their 40 goals, makes them a potential candidate for relegation.
Arguably last season’s top performer Amadou Onana has also departed the club to join Aston Villa, while their only offensive signing is Iliman Ndiaye, who struggled in Ligue 1 last campaign. This makes it clear that in order for Everton to move further away from relegation they need to bring in multiple signings, particularly in the forward areas where they have so badly struggled in recent years.
