EPL Relegation Battle Assessed

We are well into the second half of the 2023/24 English Premier League campaign, with at least six teams competing in the battle to avoid the drop.

It is looking extremely tight at the bottom of the table, with just six points separating 14th and 18th place, so all could change within a few weeks.

We pick three teams we think are destined to be playing EFL Championship football next season.

Sheffield United

The first side we are predicting to get relegated is Sheffield United, after they were only recently promoted to the top flight and sit rock bottom, eight points adrift of 17th place.

The Blades recently picked up an important three points against Luton Town away from home, but they have not shown enough quality in the opening 24 games to prove that they can string a run of games together, after winning just three times. They have at least surpassed Derby County’s lowest EPL points tally of 11, with 14 matches to go.

Burnley

Burnley are another one of the newly promoted sides that we have tipped to head straight back to the Championship, winning just three out of their opening 24 league games.

Vincent Kompany has found it difficult to adapt to life as a manager in the Premier League, after he won the Championship last term by a whopping 10 points, but the jump has proven too much for his side to deal with. Not being able to adapt their possession based style of football has hurt Burnley dearly.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have spent a large amount of money since gaining promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago, but have struggled and sit just two points above the drop zone this term.

Forest finished last campaign four points above the relegation zone, but we feel like the will fail to escape the drop this term with Luton Town’s impressive home form and Everton having enough quality within their ranks to remain in the top flight. An impending possible points deduction doesn’t help Forest’s cause.
