As the English Premier League nears its end, the three-horse title race has become increasingly more dramatic as all three sides push to finish at the top of the table.
Arsenal and Liverpool’s defeats to Aston Villa and Crystal Palace a fortnight ago saw a huge twist in the tale with neither side expected to lose, leaving Manchester City in first place following their 5-1 thrashing of Luton Town.
While the Gunners managed to return to winning ways with victories against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a 5-0 humiliation of Chelsea, Liverpool won 3-1 against Fulham before falling to defeat once again in the Merseyside derby.

Arsenal boost their goal difference
That fantastic win for Arsenal not only saw them move to the top of the league, holding a three-point lead over Liverpool with just four games left to play, but also providing a massive boost to their already impressive goal difference that could prove vital come the end of the season.
While Manchester City’s goal difference is hugely inferior with just 44 compared to Arsenal’s 56, the Manchester side boast two games in hand over first and second that could see them re-take top spot if they are to win both as they trail the Gunners by just four points.
Liverpool stumble at the worst possible time
Liverpool’s chances of winning the league in Jurgen Klopp’s final year at the club look all but over after their recent defeats, with captain Virgil van Dijk admitting that they “don’t deserve to win the league” following their recent performances.
Jurgen Klopp largely echoed these sentiments as he stated after the Everton loss that he “can’t say now that we are still fully in it”. The manager went on to say that the only way his side can win the league from this position is if Manchester City and Arsenal suffer a crisis in the final matches of the season.
Following the Merseyside derby Gary Neville stated that Liverpool will know the title is now probably gone, while also saying that Arsenal will have to remain almost perfect if they are to beat Manchester City to the title.
He did, however, go on to say that it’s not all over yet as Brighton could somehow defeat Manchester City, while also providing a warning to the Gunners that they need to learn from Liverpool’s defeat ahead of their own derby with Tottenham:
“It’s a big game on Sunday and (Liverpool’s defeat to Everton) is a big lesson for Arsenal tonight.”
With just four games left of the season, and City having a depth of knowledge on winning titles in previous seasons, it is hard to see anyone other than Pep Guardiola’s men ending the season as victors, but the Premier League rarely fails to surprise and there could yet be another twist to the tale.
