There was a host of Europe’s top clubs in action this weekend in pre-season, including an El Classico battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
With the start to competitive football just around the corner, the top sides will be looking to get their final signings in the door ahead of the opening fixtures.
We take a look at the key matches to have taken place over the last weekend.
Real Madrid vs Barcelona
The El Classico took place this weekend when Real Madrid faced Barcelona at the AT&T Stadium, and Xavi’s side came away with a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Ousmane Dembele, Fermin Lopez Martin and Ferran Torres.
This victory for the Spanish champions will certainly give them confidence ahead of the upcoming campaign, and the impressive performance from Lopez Martin will definitely have got the faithful excited.
Manchester United vs Borussia Dortmund
Manchester United suffered their second pre-season defeat against Dortmund last night when they narrowly lost 3-2, with Diogo Dalot and Antony getting on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.
Erik ten Hag will not be too disheartened with the loss, as it will give him a better idea of who to pick in his starting XI come the start of the English Premier League season
Rasmus Hojlund is on the brink of signing for United this summer for a reported fee of £72m as ten Hag is keen to bolster his attacking options and hopefully add more goals to his current squad
Manchester City vs Atletico Madrid
Manchester City also suffered a defeat in their most recent pre-season fixture against Atletico Madrid, with Ruben Diaz getting a late consolation goal in the 85th minute.
Atletico had the majority of the chances in the game and ended up with a deserved victory, and City now have the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday to look forward to, ahead of the following week when the English top flight resumes.
City have opted to bring in Mateo Kovacic this summer, and with the Josko Gvardiol deal looking like it will break down, it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola will push to get another big name in the door.
