Newcastle United are looking to bolster their squad this summer ahead of their first UEFA Champions League campaign for nearly 20 years.
Whilst they managed to secure the signature of promising midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, Eddie Howe’s men still need to add some strength in depth to their current crop of players.
Due to the Saudi Takeover last year, Newcastle have an extensive budget to work with, but Howe is keen on carefully picking the right players that will work in the system that he wishes to implement.
Here’s a look at three players that could fit into the Newcastle system.
Theo Hernandez
Theo Hernandez has been linked with a move to the English Premier League outfit in this transfer window, but AC Milan might be keen to keep their man.
The French defender is one of the most highly rated left-backs in world football, so he would be an excellent addition to the Magpies squad as they have Champions League football to contend with next term.
However, AC Milan have already let Tonali leave this summer to join Newcastle, so it might be difficult to see another one of their key players leave in the same transfer window.
Marc Guehi
Marc Guehi is another name heavily linked with a move to Newcastle this summer, and the English defender might be fond of the idea of a switch to St James’ Park.
It would certainly be a move in the right direction for the English defender and Howe might be keen to add him to the squad due to his impressive performances over the last 18 months which has earned him four England senior caps.
However, there have been reports suggesting that the Magpies would have to pay upwards of £60m if they want to get Guehi in the door, which could price him out of a move away from Crystal Palace.
Federico Chiesa
Chiesa is the latest man to have been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer and the reported fee that the Italian could cost Newcastle is £52m.
The 25-year-old attacker might be keen on a move away from Juventus after falling out of favour under Max Allegri due to not fitting the system played.
Newcastle face fierce competition from several EPL clubs such as Liverpool and Aston Villa for Chiesa’s signature, so it will be interesting to see where the Italian ends up come the end of the transfer window.
