Football is back! The English Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1 all started this weekend, with goals flying in as some of the best teams in the world looked to make a perfect start to the new season.
Some outstanding goals flew in over the weekend, with young stars and established talents adding to their highlight reels.
Here are some of the best goals from the top five leagues as European football returned to our screens.
Deiver Machado – Lens vs Brest
Colombian left-back Machado put Lens 2-0 up after just 22 minutes with a sensational run and finish down the wing. Lens produced some intricate passing to get out of danger in their half before a long ball found Machado racing towards goal.
Machado controlled the ball well to escape the Brest defence before hammering a powerful shot home at the near post for his first goal of the season. Despite this moment of brilliance putting Lens two goals up, they couldn’t hold on to win as three unanswered goals from Brest gave them the three points
Erling Haaland – Manchester City vs Burnley
Manchester City’s goal machine is back doing what he does best. With City already 1-0 up after Haaland’s early finish from inside the box, Argentinian youngster Julian Alvarez found the Norwegian in a pocket of space on the right hand side of the area.
Haaland made no mistake – whipping a superb first-time finish into the top corner to send City on their way to the three points. If he can maintain this sort of form, City will be a tough team to bet against this season.
Bukayo Saka – Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest
Another of last season’s stars got on the scoresheet this weekend, and in spectacular style. With Arsenal 1-0 up after Eddie Nketiah’s early strike, The Gunners’ main man Bukayo Saka cut in from the right wing after being found by William Saliba.
What happened next was something straight out of Arjen Robben’s book of tricks – Saka found space 20 yards out before sending an stunning shot into the top corner, out of the reach of Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner.
Azzedine Ounahi – Marseille vs Reims
After starring at the 2022 FIFA World Cup for Morocco, Ounahi got his big move to Marseille in January of this year. He started this season in the best possible fashion, curling a brilliant finish into the Reims net from 25 yards out to put Marseille level.
Jarrod Bowen – West Ham United vs Bournemouth
Bowen will be a West Ham hero for years to come after his winning goal in the UEFA Europa Conference League final last season, and he’s started this season in the same vein of form. The Cherries’ defence stood off the England man as he curved a shot into the top left corner from 20 yards.
Akor Adams – Montpellier vs Le Havre
Nigerian striker Akor Adams marked his first appearance for Montpellier with two well-taken goals, but his second will live long in the memory. Despite his big frame, Adams showed a great burst of pace to get on the end of a long ball forward before finishing superbly from the edge of the box to put Montpellier ahead. If he continues to play like this in France, many big teams could be after his signature.
