Victor Ikpeba – How Will Spurs Cope Without Harry Kane?

Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time record goalscorer Harry Kane has left the English Premier League in search of silverware at Bayern Munich, leaving Tottenham with a big gap to fill in their squad.

We spoke to Bet9ja Ambassador Victor Ikpeba, about how Spurs will deal with such a big player leaving and what this means for Kane’s career going forward.

There is a huge Harry Kane-shaped hole in Spurs’ team – how will they cope without him?

VI: It will take a long time for Spurs to get used to not having Kane around. He’s left a massive gap to be filled, and I can’t think of a player off the top of my head who will be able to fill that gap straight away.

Heung-Min Son is a great player but more of a winger or an attacking midfielder. He’s dangerous when he gets in behind the defence but I’m not sure he can play as a number nine in the same way as Kane.

It’s a massive blow. For one of the best players in the league in the last decade to leave is always going to be hard to replace. Where are the goals coming from? Sure, Son will score but Richarlison showed last season that he’s not going to contribute with many goals.

Can you think of any similar situations where such iconic big players left their clubs?

VI: It’s very rare nowadays to see forwards being one-club men. We saw with Cristiano Ronaldo – he went from Manchester United to Real Madrid, and then Juventus. Lionel Messi looked like he was going to stay at Barcelona for the rest of his career but ended up moving to PSG and now Inter Miami.

I was surprised that Kane went to Bayern. I think it was obvious that he wasn’t going to go to Liverpool and Chelsea because neither team has UEFA Champions League football, but I couldn’t understand why Manchester United didn’t enter the race.

Bayern and Harry Kane is a good match. He’s a great goalscorer and is playing for a great team who are in with a chance of winning the biggest trophies around.

Do you think that Kane made the right decision leaving for trophies over the EPL scoring record?

VI: Definitely. Trophies are what really matter in football over goalscoring records and other things like this. Alan Shearer made the move back to his boyhood club Newcastle United from Blackburn Rovers, but this was after he won the league with them in 1995.

Harry Kane knows this – age doesn’t wait for anyone and he will want to finish his career with medals and trophies.
