Why are Arsenal linked with Mohammed Kudus?

Despite being the busiest of all the English Premier League clubs this transfer window, Arsenal have been linked with yet another player in recent days – Ajax’s Ghanian star Mohammed Kudus.

After hitting 18 goals in all competitions in what was a disappointing season for the Dutch giants, Kudus has been pinpointed as a potential option for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Here’s how he could fit in amongst a squad full of young stars.

Versatility

One of the most impressive and unique aspects of Kudus’ game is his ability to play a number of positions to an extremely high standard. With Mikel Arteta’s side contesting with UEFA Champions League football for the first time since 2017, having the ability to rotate players in and out of positions in order to avoid injuries and burnout will be extremely important.

Kudus played at centre forward, right wing and attacking midfield last season – Arteta has a number of options in midfield and up top, but some extra cover for Bukayo Saka will be important if Arsenal are going to be competitive across multiple competitions.

Playing style

At just 22-years-old, Kudus is still growing as a player but already has some excellent technical and physical attributes. A fast and direct dribbler, Kudus was Ghana’s star player at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with his powerful bursts creating many chances for The Black Stars.

His finishing from both long and short range is another exciting aspect of his game. Kudus strikes through the ball with extreme power on his left foot – his finish against Liverpool at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League won goal of the month in the tournament.

Ajax as a football club have traditionally played in a similar style to Arsenal, with a lot of attention placed on playing attractive football in order to get results.

Jurrien Timber, Arteta’s recent defensive signing, played with Kudus at Ajax and looks to have adjusted well to Arsenal’s playing style in their match against the MLS All Stars. If Kudus is to sign for Arsenal then he will be at home with Arsenal’s way of operating on the field

Age

Under previous management Arsenal spent big money on players like Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who were approaching their thirties and unlikely to improve massively as players at that point of their career. In recent years they have prioritised younger signings with their future in front of them – Kudus fits into this mould perfectly and would be able to give his best years to The Gunners, along with the rest of their young talent as Mikel Arteta looks to improve on their impressive displays from last season.
