Tonight’s Milan derby has the potential to be one of the best we have seen in recent years, with the game holding huge stakes over the Serie A.
Inter are currently 14 points clear at the top of the league, while Milan sit second on 69 points. While a win for Milan would see them move closer to Inter in the title race with just six games remaining and Inter holding such a large lead, it would unlikely have any effect on the eventual winner.
As for Inter, a win in this game would guarantee their status as Serie A champions, securing a historic title against their bitter rivals after a phenomenal season that has seen them lose on just a sole occasion so far.
Because of this, the game is one of the most highly anticipated Milan derbies of recent times, and we’re going to take a look back at some of the best over the past 20 years:

2009: Treble Winners Inter breeze past Milan
2009/10 is one of the most successful campaigns that either of these sides have enjoyed in their fruitful histories as Jose Mourinho guided his Inter side to a fantastic treble win, taking home the Serie A, Italian Cup and Champions League.
The second game of this Serie A season saw the Milan derby take place, and Inter certainly stamped their authority down ahead of a fantastic season.
Goals from Thiago Motta and Diego Milito put Inter 2-0 up within 36 minutes, with Genaro Gattuso’s red card marking the end of the game. Maicon netted a third just before half-time, with the cherry on top coming when Dejan Stankovic added a fourth just after the hour mark.
2020: Inter’s second-half comeback
This game saw Milan arguably put out the better performance, holding more of the ball and taking more shots than their opponents. However, the result certainly did not share this sentiment.
Milan managed to quickly put themselves 2-0 up before the break thanks to two goals coming from Ante Rebic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic within five minutes of each other. Just six minutes after the break though, Inter were straight back in the game.
Marcelo Brozovic scored the first in the 51st, followed by an equaliser just two minutes later from Matias Vecino. Stefan de Vrij then completed the comeback in the 70th minute, while Romelu Lukaku added a fourth for good measure in the 93rd as Inter secured a brilliant 4-2 victory.
2005: ‘Derby of Shame’
2005 saw the two Milan clubs come together in the Champions League quarter-finals, just two years after Milan won on away goals in a Champions League semi-final matchup between the two as they went on to eventually win that year’s competition.
The first leg between these two saw Milan hold a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jaap Stam and Andriy Shevchenko. The tie looked as though it was past saving for Inter when Shevchenko scored the opening goal of the second leg on the stroke of half-time, making it 3-0 on aggregate.
However, Inter’s Esteban Cambiasso had a goal disallowed that sparked rage amongst the Inter ultras. A barrage of flares were launched onto the pitch, with one striking Milan goalkeeper Dida. This prompted the referee to order the players back into the changing rooms, calling off the game in the process.
Milan were awarded a 3-0 victory as they marched onto the final, where they eventually collapsed against Liverpool in one of the most infamous Champions League finals.
