The fourth matchday of this year’s UEFA Champions League group stage takes place this week. As the groups start to enter their closing stages, the stakes of each game are beginning to increase as teams look to solidify their chances to qualify from the group.
Arsenal are coming into the game having disappointingly lost their first Premier League game this season as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in a game that was riddled with controversy.
Sevilla come into the game on the back of yet another draw in La Liga as they were held to a 1-1 draw to Celta Vigo.
Arsenal vs Sevilla
Wednesday 8 November, 21:00
Emirates Stadium
Arsenal had been enjoying a fantastic start to their season as they had gone unbeaten in domestic competition for the first two months of the season. However, November has seen their fortunes change thus far with them losing both games to West Ham United in the EFL Cup, and Newcastle United in the Premier League last weekend.
While confidence may be low after these two results, they will find some confidence in the fact that they are firmly in the driving seat for qualification from their Champions League group. A win would leave them seven points above Sevilla and if RC Lens are to win their game against PSV then it would confirm Arsenal’s advancement to the knockout stages.
Sevilla have had a dismal run in recent weeks with just one win in their last eight games, with this coming against CD Quintanar in the first round of the Copa del Ray. Draws are becoming far too frequent in their recent results too, with all of their last four La Liga games ending in stalemate. However, Sevilla will need to figure out how to turn one of these draws into a win against Arsenal if they are to stand any chance of advancing from the group, otherwise they may find themselves in a battle for third place to drop back down to the competition they were victorious in last season – the Europa League.
