Meet Your World Cup Spain Fan Voice: Diego Álvarez

Who Am I?

I’m Diego Álvarez, 29, from Valencia, and I’ve been following Spanish football my whole life. I grew up going to Mestalla watching Valencia CF with my dad, and like a lot of fans my age, I experienced Spain’s golden era in real time. That period shaped my expectations of what this national team should look like.

Why I’m Here with Bet9ja

Bet9ja approached me ahead of the World Cup because they wanted real fans of the biggest football nations to give insight, not just generic previews.

The idea is simple. If you are reading about Spain, it should come from someone who watches the players every week, understands the context behind performances, and actually cares about the outcome.

That is the role I’ll be playing throughout the tournament.

Why I’m Worth Listening To

I’ve been betting on football for around 11 years now, mostly focused on Valencia, and Spanish football. I’m not someone throwing random accumulators together five minutes before kick-off. I watch the games properly, follow form closely, and usually focus on player markets, bet builders, and in-play opportunities where there’s actual value.

My biggest ever win came during the 2022 World Cup with a €10 Spain bet builder when we beat Costa Rica 7-0 that landed at just over 108.00 odds. Since then, I’ve become obsessed with building smarter bets rather than just bigger ones.

Growing Up with Spain

I’m probably part of the last generation that truly grew up spoiled by this national team.

I was 11 when UEFA Euro 2008 happened, watching that Fernando Torres goal in the final at my grandparents’ house with my whole family crowded around the TV. That was the first time it felt real, like Spain weren’t just talented, but actually winners.

Then came the peak. 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Three tournaments in a row where everything just worked. At that age, you don’t question it, you just assume it will always be like that.

Of course, it wasn’t. The crash back to reality came quickly. Going out in the group stage in 2014, then last 16 exits in 2018 and 2022, it felt like that era was completely gone.

Since Luis de la Fuente took over in 2022, though, there has been a clear shift. The team feels more balanced, more direct when it needs to be, but still built around control in midfield. Watching players like Pedri dictate games again, with Rodri anchoring things, brings back that sense of identity.

And then you have the new edge in attack, especially with Lamine Yamal. That unpredictability was missing for a while.

How I See Spain Right Now

There is a quiet confidence around Spain going into this World Cup after winning Euro 2024. It feels like a natural progression rather than a surprise.

The form of Mikel Oyarzabal is a big factor. He has taken responsibility in the striker role and delivered consistently, which gives Spain a focal point they have sometimes lacked in recent tournaments.

The biggest talking point, though, is Lamine Yamal. His recent hamstring injury means he will miss the rest of Barcelona’s season, but the expectation is that he will be fit for the World Cup. If he is, we have a player who can decide games on his own.

There are still questions defensively, and that is something I will be watching closely, but overall the squad has the balance and depth to go all the way.

What I’ll Be Bringing

Throughout the tournament, I’ll be covering Spain from every angle. That includes match previews, betting insights, player focus pieces, and reactions as things unfold.

The aim is to give you a clear understanding of how Spain are playing and where the value might be when it comes to betting markets.

I especially like bet builder markets around cards, corners, player shots and cards. Bet9ja’s 1UP feature is also one of my favourites because it suits the way Spain often start games quickly and dominate early periods.
