That’s probably the biggest difference with this England team compared to most tournaments I’ve watched growing up.
For years, England went into major tournaments hoping things might click. Now, there’s a genuine feeling that this squad should be winning something.
After reaching the semi-final in 2018 and back-to-back European Championship finals under Gareth Southgate, England have brought in Thomas Tuchel to try and get them over the line.
And honestly, with the talent available now, anything less than a serious run would feel like a waste.

England could not really have asked for a smoother qualification campaign.
Eight games, eight wins, no goals conceded. More importantly, though, the football actually looked proactive and aggressive at times, which is something England fans have wanted for years.
Under Tuchel, there already seems to be more freedom in attack. England are taking more risks on the ball, pressing higher, and looking to overwhelm teams rather than simply manage games safely.
That’s exciting, but it also comes with risks.

The Croatia game immediately stands out because of the history between the two sides after 2018.
It also feels like the perfect early test for where England really are under Tuchel.
Why This England Team Feels Different
The biggest difference is mentality.
For years, England teams looked weighed down by pressure and expectation. Even when the squads were talented, like in 2006, it often felt like the players were scared of making mistakes.
Since 2018, that fear has slowly disappeared.
Now, with Tuchel in charge, England finally have a manager who combines elite-level tactical experience with the confidence to let this team actually attack.
And this squad is loaded with talent.
The obvious focal point is Harry Kane. As long as he stays fit, England will believe they can beat anyone. But players like Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice give England far more control and balance than previous generations had.
Players Who Will Define Our Tournament
Everything still revolves around Kane.
When he’s fully fit and sharp, England look completely different because of how much he influences games beyond just goals.
But I’m also fascinated by what Tuchel does with younger players like Elliot Anderson, who feels tailor-made for the intensity this England side wants to play with.
And then there’s Bellingham.
Every tournament has one player who suddenly feels bigger than the competition itself. England fans are hoping this could be his moment.
The Tactical Questions
The biggest concern for me is what happens if Kane gets injured.
England still do not have a perfect alternative, and you could see during the recent defeat to Japan how much the structure changed without him.
There are also defensive questions.
Tuchel’s system asks a lot from the full-backs and leaves space in transition, especially against fast counter-attacking teams. Against weaker sides, England will dominate. Against elite nations, those spaces become much more dangerous.
Still, I’d rather watch an England team trying to impose itself than one sitting back afraid to lose.
What England Expects This Summer
The pressure around England is enormous now.
Reaching finals is no longer enough. Competing well is no longer enough either. England fans believe this generation should win a major tournament, especially with the quality available across the squad.
That expectation only increases with Tuchel in charge because he was brought in for one reason: to deliver trophies.
And honestly, this might be the most balanced England squad I’ve seen in my lifetime.
There’s creativity, physicality, depth, and players used to performing in the biggest club matches in the world.
The challenge is proving they can handle those expectations when the pressure becomes unbearable in the knockout rounds.

My Expectation for England
I genuinely think England have everything needed to win this tournament.
That doesn’t mean they will, because England have taught us all to be cautious, but this squad has fewer weaknesses than most of the previous “golden generations”.
If Tuchel gets the balance right and Kane stays fit, England will be one of the teams nobody wants to face in the knockout rounds.
At some point, England have to stop fearing the moment and start embracing it.
This tournament feels like the biggest opportunity yet.
