Five games into the 2026/27 Premier League season, the table already looks very different.
Manchester City have made the biggest improvement compared with the same stage last season, while Tottenham, Bournemouth and Fulham have suffered the biggest drops.
Here’s how all 20 clubs stack up after five matches. The current positions and points match the table after Gameweek 5.
1. Manchester City — 15 points (+8)
Last season: 7 points
Five wins from five and the biggest year-on-year improvement in the league. City had collected just seven points at this stage last season, but they are eight points better off this time around and already sit top of the table.
2. Arsenal — 12 points (+2)
Last season: 10 points
Saturday’s shock 3-0 defeat at Brighton ended Arsenal’s perfect start, but the champions are still two points ahead of last season’s pace. Four wins from five leaves them second, three points behind City.
3. Brighton — 10 points (+5)
Last season: 5 points
One of the biggest improvers in the division. Brighton have doubled their points total from this stage last season, with their emphatic 3-0 victory over Arsenal providing the standout result of their excellent start.
4. Brentford — 9 points (+5)
Last season: 4 points
Another huge improvement. Brentford are five points better off than after five games last season, and their 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Friday showed just how dangerous they can be.
5. Leeds United — 9 points (+2)
Last season: 7 points
Leeds remain unbeaten after five matches and have added two points to their total from the equivalent stage last season. Nine points already represents an impressive start.
6. Liverpool — 9 points (-6)
Last season: 15 points
Liverpool may be unbeaten, but their start is significantly slower than last season. They were perfect after five games a year ago, meaning they are already six points down despite Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Bournemouth.
7. Everton — 9 points (+2)
Last season: 7 points
A steady improvement for Everton, who have picked up two additional points compared with last season. Their 1-0 victory over Ipswich took them to nine from their opening five.
8. Hull City — 8 points (N/A)
Last season: N/A
There is no direct Premier League comparison for Hull, but eight points from their first five games represents an impressive start following promotion.
9. Newcastle United — 8 points (+2)
Last season: 6 points
Newcastle are another side moving in the right direction. Their 2-1 victory over Hull moved them onto eight points, two more than they had managed at the same stage last season.
10. Chelsea — 7 points (-1)
Last season: 8 points
Only one point separates Chelsea’s two starts on paper, but their heavy 3-0 defeat at Brentford has added pressure after an inconsistent opening five matches.
11. Ipswich Town — 6 points (N/A)
Last season: N/A
Ipswich cannot be directly compared with last season, but six points from five games gives them something to build on as they look to establish themselves in the Premier League.
12. Manchester United — 5 points (-2)
Last season: 7 points
United’s difficult start continued with a 1-1 draw at Fulham, leaving them on just five points. That is two fewer than last season and matches their lowest five-game return of the Premier League era.
13. Nottingham Forest — 5 points (0)
Last season: 5 points
Exactly where they were a year ago. Forest have matched last season’s five-point return, although a home defeat to Coventry means they enter the next round looking for a response.
14. Sunderland — 4 points (-4)
Last season: 8 points
Sunderland have collected only half as many points as they had at this stage last season. Their latest defeat was certainly entertaining, though, as they lost 5-3 at Manchester City despite Brian Brobbey scoring a hat-trick.
15. Crystal Palace — 4 points (-5)
Last season: 9 points
Palace are five points worse off than they were after five games last season. A goalless draw at Leeds added another point, but their early-season return remains well below last year’s.
16. Aston Villa — 4 points (+1)
Last season: 3 points
Villa have only four points, but that still represents a slight improvement. Their dramatic 3-2 win away at Tottenham gave them their first league victory and moved them one point ahead of last season’s pace.
17. Bournemouth — 3 points (-7)
Last season: 10 points
One of the most dramatic declines in the league. Bournemouth had 10 points after five matches last season but have managed just three this time – a seven-point swing.
18. Coventry City — 3 points (N/A)
Last season: N/A
No comparison is available following promotion, but Coventry finally got their first points of the campaign with a huge 1-0 victory away at Nottingham Forest.
19. Fulham — 2 points (-6)
Last season: 8 points
Fulham have endured a difficult opening, collecting six fewer points than at this stage last season. Draws against Liverpool & Manchester United have at least moved them onto two points.
20. Tottenham — 2 points (-8)
Last season: 10 points
No club has fallen further behind last season’s pace. Spurs had 10 points after five games a year ago but have just two this season, an eight-point decline that leaves them bottom of the table after defeat to Aston Villa.
The Biggest Winners and Losers
The contrast at the two ends is huge. Manchester City are +8 compared with last season, while Tottenham are -8, representing a 16-point swing between the league’s biggest improver and biggest faller.
Brighton and Brentford are also flying at +5, while Bournemouth (-7), Liverpool (-6) and Fulham (-6) have significant ground to make up.
There is still a long way to go – but after five matches, some clubs already look very different from this time last season.
