Africa has produced some of the most exciting, successful and influential footballers the game has ever seen.
From Ballon d’Or winners and Champions League legends to players who carried their countries to continental glory, narrowing the continent’s history down to just 20 names is no easy task.
We’ve ranked our greatest African footballers of all time, considering their peak ability, club career, international impact, individual honours and lasting legacy.
20. Lauren – Cameroon
A key member of both Arsenal’s Invincibles and one of Cameroon’s greatest generations, Lauren built an outstanding career at club and international level. The right-back won two Premier League titles with Arsenal and back-to-back AFCON titles with Cameroon in 2000 and 2002.
19. Kolo Touré – Ivory Coast
From arriving at Arsenal as a relatively unknown youngster to becoming an Invincible, Kolo Touré enjoyed an excellent Premier League career. He later won another league title with Manchester City and was part of the Ivory Coast squad that finally conquered Africa in 2015.

18. Victor Osimhen – Nigeria
Already one of the greatest Nigerian strikers of all time. Osimhen inspired Napoli to their historic 2022/23 Serie A title and was subsequently crowned African Player of the Year in 2023. Osimhen has continued to build his legacy at Galatasaray, becoming a key figure in last season’s title win with 20 goals/assists in 22 matches.

17. Sunday Oliseh – Nigeria
A hugely gifted midfielder who represented some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Ajax, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund. Oliseh was part of Nigeria’s famous 1994 AFCON-winning generation and scored one of the Super Eagles’ most memorable World Cup goals against Spain in 1998.
16. Emmanuel Adebayor – Togo
Togo’s biggest footballing export enjoyed spells with Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Real Madrid. At his peak, Adebayor was one of Europe’s most dangerous strikers and his performances earned him the African Player of the Year award in 2008.

15. Samuel Kuffour – Ghana
One of Africa’s greatest defenders. Kuffour spent more than a decade with Bayern Munich, winning a host of domestic trophies and playing a major role in their 2001 Champions League triumph.
14. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Gabon
A prolific goalscorer across France, Germany and England, Aubameyang became a superstar at Borussia Dortmund before continuing to deliver for Arsenal. He was crowned African Player of the Year in 2015.
13. Seydou Keita – Mali
An often underrated member of one of the greatest club teams ever assembled. Keïia won three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues during his time with Barcelona, establishing himself as one of Mali’s most decorated footballers.
12. Michael Essien – Ghana
“The Bison” was one of the defining midfielders of Chelsea’s rise into a European powerhouse. Powerful, versatile and technically excellent, Essien won the Premier League, Champions League and numerous domestic trophies during a glittering career.

11. Riyad Mahrez – Algeria
From Leicester City’s astonishing Premier League triumph to winning the Treble with Manchester City, Mahrez has a trophy cabinet few African players can match. He also led Algeria to AFCON glory in 2019 and won African Player of the Year in 2016.

10. Abedi Pelé – Ghana
A trailblazer for African football in Europe and one of Ghana’s greatest ever players. Abedi Pelé starred for Marseille during their rise to the top of European football and was recognised among Africa’s finest players of his generation.
9. Nwankwo Kanu – Nigeria
One of Nigeria’s most decorated footballers. Kanu won the Champions League with Ajax, two Premier League titles with Arsenal and Olympic gold with Nigeria, while twice being named African Player of the Year.

8. Achraf Hakimi – Morocco
Still building his legacy, but Hakimi has already put together an extraordinary career. A world-class modern full-back and one of the faces of Morocco’s golden generation, he was crowned African Player of the Year in 2025 after winning the UCL with PSG, which he repeated again a year later.

7. Sadio Mané – Senegal
A Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool and a national hero in Senegal. Mané helped deliver Senegal’s first-ever AFCON title and was twice named African Player of the Year, in 2019 and 2022.

6. Jay-Jay Okocha – Nigeria
Few footballers have ever been as entertaining to watch. Okocha combined outrageous technique, creativity and personality to become a cult hero wherever he played and remains one of the most iconic Super Eagles players ever.

5. Yaya Touré – Ivory Coast
At his peak, Yaya Touré was almost impossible to stop. The Manchester City powerhouse could dominate games physically and technically, and remains the only player to win the CAF African Player of the Year award four consecutive times, from 2011 to 2014.

4. Didier Drogba – Ivory Coast
One of the ultimate big-game strikers. Drogba became a Chelsea legend, winning four Premier League titles and scoring the decisive penalty in their first Champions League triumph in 2012. He was twice crowned African Player of the Year.

3. Mohamed Salah – Egypt
One of the greatest players in Premier League history, not just one of Africa’s finest. Salah’s extraordinary goalscoring exploits with Liverpool have brought major domestic and European honours, while he won consecutive African Player of the Year awards in 2017 and 2018.

2. George Weah – Liberia
George Weah achieved something no other African-born men’s player has matched: winning the Ballon d’Or, taking football’s biggest individual prize in 1995 after establishing himself among the finest forwards in the world.
For many, that achievement alone is enough to put the Liberian at No.1. But one man just edges him on our list.

1. Samuel Eto’o – Cameroon
Our pick for the greatest African footballer of all time.
Eto’o combined individual brilliance with an extraordinary trophy haul. He won two AFCON titles with Cameroon, starred in Barcelona’s Champions League-winning sides and then formed part of José Mourinho’s historic Treble-winning Inter Milan team.
He also won African Player of the Year four times, a record he shares with Yaya Touré.
From Cameroon to the very top of European football, Eto’o did it all – and takes the crown as our greatest African footballer ever.
