Liverpool vs Manchester City
Sunday 11 October, 16:30
Anfield
Liverpool have had a mixed start to the 2026/27 English Premier League season under new boss Andoni Iraola, winning two and drawing three of their opening five matches, leaving them with nine points from five games.
The Reds, consequently, sit sixth in the standings and only trail the first-placed side by six points, a lead Liverpool will be hoping to halve when they take on the league leaders on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool do head into this encounter off the back of two straight wins, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in the EFL Cup and Bournemouth 1-0 in the final match before the international break.
While the Reds will draw confidence from those results, as well as their unbeaten start to the season as a whole, Liverpool are still looking for their first home win of the league season, having drawn each of their two EPL fixtures at Anfield.
Fortunately for the Reds, the Anfield crowd are expected to create an extremely difficult atmosphere for Manchester City on Sunday, which Liverpool will be hoping can help lead them to victory.
News emerged during the international break that Man City had been found guilty of 114 of 115 charges by the English Premier League, and while the Citizens are currently in the process of an appeal, that will not stop the Anfield crowd from expressing their displeasure towards the Citizens.
Liverpool have been one of the most affected clubs by Man City’s dominance, having regularly finished behind Pep Guardiola’s side during their time under Jurgen Klopp, and the Reds are sure to make their feelings heard with an explosive and hostile atmosphere.
Man City will have, however, be able to draw strength from their strong start to the season, having won all of their first five league fixtures under new manager Enzo Maresca, leaving them top of the table.
The Citizens have been particularly threatening going forward, scoring 13 goals in five matches, although Liverpool will draw confidence from City’s seemingly vulnerable defence, highlighted particularly in their 5-3 win against Sunderland.
Team News
Liverpool are contending with injuries to Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Federico Chiesa, while Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Jeremy Jacquet are also doubts due to injury concerns.
The Reds will be hopeful Isak will be back in time to start, and the striker is likely to be supported by Victor Munoz, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola.
Meanwhile, Man City are potentially without Nico O’Reilly and Antoine Semenyo due to injury, while Phil Foden remains suspended following his dismissal in the Manchester derby.
Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku could start behind Erling Haaland in attack, with Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez continuing at the base of midfield.
Liverpool Predicted XI: Alisson; Araujo, Van Dijk, Jacquet, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Munoz, Wirtz, Barcola; Isak
Manchester City Predicted XI: Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Fernandez, Anderson; Ndiaye, Cherki, Doku; Haaland
