Newcastle United’s injury crisis unbelievably worsened during their 1-0 win against Manchester United at the weekend as Nick Pope had to be substituted off for Martin Dubravka in the 86th minute, becoming the 10th first team player to be ruled out with injury.
With what appears to be a dislocated shoulder, Pope is likely to be out for the majority of the season and reports indicate that Eddie Howe’s side will be in the market for a replacement keeper in January.
While Dubravka and Loris Karius are more than able second and third-choice goalkeepers, unless they are able to massively impress Howe in the following weeks then it is unlikely that Newcastle will rely on these two for the remainder of the season.
With this news, we’ve taken a look across the footballing world and picked out three goalkeepers who we believe could replace Nick Pope at Newcastle United:
David De Gea – Free Agent
De Gea left Manchester United in the summer after 12 successful years at the club, but the Spaniard is still yet to find a new club and remains a free agent. This would make it the perfect signing for Newcastle as no transfer or loan fee would be required from a club to make the signing, making much more sense for a player who is only likely join on a short-term basis.
The ex-Manchester United man would bring huge experience to this Newcastle side, with him making 545 appearances for his former club while also winning multiple accolades including personal achievements such as four Player of the Year awards. Coming off the back of winning last season’s Premier League Golden Glove, this seems like the perfect signing for a Newcastle side in need of a stop-gap until the end of the season.
Aaron Ramsdale – Arsenal
Despite enjoying two impressive seasons at Arsenal, Ramsdale has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta this season with it being seemingly clear that new signing David Raya is now the number one keeper at the Emirates Stadium. It’s been reported that Ramsdale is unhappy with this new situation and could be looking for a move elsewhere to give him the best chance of travelling to EURO 2024 with England.
With the emergence of this position at Newcastle, it would be the ideal opportunity for Ramsdale to re-prove his worth and the potential of a loan signing could be enticing for all parties involved. The only stumbling block on this move is whether Arsenal would be willing to help strengthen a potential rival.
Keylor Navas – PSG
Navas is one of the most successful keepers to have played the game, with the former Real Madrid man being one of the first names on the team sheet during their three-peat of the UEFA Champions League.
However, he has found himself in similar positions to Ramsdale at multiple points in his career. Following Thibaut Courtois’ arrival at Real Madrid, Navas played second fiddle for a season before moving on to PSG for a new start, but a similar situation occurred after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival at the Parc des Princes.
Because of this, Navas went on loan to Nottingham Forest in last season’s January transfer window and played a key part in helping secure their Premier League status in their first season back in the top flight. This leaves Navas as no stranger to coming in to cover a position in the January window and with the possibility of playing in the Champions League once again, this opportunity is one that Navas is highly unlikely to turn down.
