France 2026 World Cup Fan Preview

Camille Laurent will be covering France throughout the World Cup for Bet9ja, bringing previews, betting insight, reactions, and tournament analysis all summer long.

France are carrying the weight of expectation again, and at this point, France arrive at every major tournament expected to go deep.

After winning the 2018 World Cup and reaching the final again in 2022, anything less than another serious run in North America would feel disappointing. That’s just the standard now with this generation.

And honestly, when you look at the squad, it’s easy to understand why.

There are probably deeper squads in club football than there are at international level, but I genuinely don’t think any country can match France for pure talent across the pitch right now.

How France Reached the World Cup

  • Qualifying record: 5W-0L-1D
  • Goals for / against: 16 / 4
  • Top scorer: Kylian Mbappé (5)
  • Top assists: Kylian Mbappé (3)

Qualification felt very comfortable for France overall.

The only dropped points came in a 2-2 draw away in Iceland, but outside of that, there was never really any sense of danger. France simply had too much quality.

The important thing was not just qualifying, but how the attack started to click again after a strange Euro 2024 where France created far less than people expected.

Since then, there has been far more fluidity going forward.

Senegal immediately stands out because France have painful history there after 2002.

Norway could also be awkward depending on how much space France allow in transition against players like Erling Haaland.

Why This France Team Still Feels So Dangerous

The scary thing about France is that they often do not even need to play brilliantly to win games.

Under Didier Deschamps, there has always been a focus on structure and organisation first, even if some fans wish the football was more expressive at times.

But when you combine that solidity with attackers like Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Desire Doue, France can destroy teams very quickly.

This feels like the most balanced France attack since probably 2018.

Players Who Will Define Our Tournament

Mbappé is still the face of everything.

Even after all these years, there are moments where he simply looks impossible to stop, and his numbers this season have been ridiculous again despite Real Madrid struggling collectively.

But I’m especially excited to watch Olise at this tournament.

The way he links midfield and attack gives France something different, and when he drifts centrally alongside players like Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot, France suddenly become incredibly difficult to press.

I also think this could be the tournament where Désiré Doué properly announces himself globally.

The Tactical Questions

The biggest concern for me is probably full-back depth.

The starting back four looks strong enough, especially with William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano in central defence, but injuries in wide areas could become a problem later in the tournament.

There is also always the question of whether Deschamps becomes too cautious in the biggest games.

France have enough attacking talent to overwhelm almost anyone, but sometimes they still retreat into control and pragmatism when instinct says they should attack.

Still, tournament football is often about surviving moments, and nobody manages those moments better than Deschamps.

What France Expects This Summer

France fans expect this team to challenge for the trophy. Simple as that.

There is too much talent, too much experience, and too much tournament knowhow for expectations to be anything lower.

This is also the final tournament for Deschamps, which adds another emotional layer to everything. Whether people have loved or criticised his football over the years, there is huge respect for what he has achieved.

And when you have a squad this strong, there is always the feeling that one magical run of form from Mbappé could carry France all the way again.

My Expectation for France

France absolutely have the quality to win this World Cup.

The biggest challenge might actually be expectation itself because this squad is so talented that people almost assume success is automatic.

But international football never works like that.

Still, when you combine tournament experience, defensive structure, and attackers capable of deciding matches on their own, France will always be one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.

Quickfire

  • Best group-stage fixture: France vs Senegal
  • Biggest concern: Full-back depth
  • Player I’m most excited for: Michael Olise
  • Potential breakout player: Désiré Doué
  • Team I least want France to face: Argentina
