Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign has not gone to plan so far, but the Super Eagles have a chance to turn things around when they face Rwanda tomorrow. With a new manager at the helm and the return of key players, this match is the perfect opportunity for Nigeria to revive their chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Must Win Match for Nigeria
The Super Eagles sit fifth in Group C with just three points from their opening four games, leaving them four points behind group leaders Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin. It has been a frustrating campaign so far, with Nigeria failing to win any of their matches and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Benin in their last outing.
With only the group winner securing an automatic place at the World Cup, and the runner-up potentially advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs, Nigeria cannot afford to drop more points. Eric Chelle, who was appointed as Nigeria’s head coach in January, will make his debut in the dugout and will be desperate to start with a win.

Rwanda’s Impressive Campaign
While Nigeria have struggled, Rwanda have been one of the surprises of Group C. The Amavubi have taken seven points from their first four matches, including wins against Lesotho and Benin. Their strong defensive performances have been key to their success, conceding just one goal in the campaign so far, keeping three clean sheets.
Previous Meetings
Nigeria and Rwanda are no strangers to each other, having faced off just four months ago in a 2025 AFCON Qualifier. In that encounter, the Super Eagles took the lead through Samuel Chukwueze, only for Rwanda to mount a comeback and claim a 2-1 victory thanks to a quickfire double from Ange Musinzi and Innocent Nshuti.
Historically, Nigeria has struggled in Kigali, failing to secure a win in their last three visits, all of which ended in draws. In fact, the Super Eagles’ only goal on Rwandan soil came from Obafemi Martins in a 2005 World Cup qualifier.
With none of their previous meetings producing more than two goals, Rwanda will be confident in their ability to frustrate Nigeria once again if they can maintain their defensive discipline.

Team News and Key Players
Nigeria will be boosted by the return of Victor Osimhen, who missed their last two qualifiers due to injury. The Galatasaray striker has been in fine form this season and will be expected to lead the line alongside Ademola Lookman. Moses Simon should also feature in the attack, giving the Super Eagles plenty of firepower and creativity in the final third.
In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Raphael Onyedika are expected to start, while Ola Aina and Calvin Bassey will form part of the defensive line. Nigeria’s backline will need to be solid, as they have conceded in all four of their qualifiers so far.
Rwanda, meanwhile, will be without defenders Yunusu Nshimiyimana and Fitina Omborenga, who are absent following the tragic passing of their father.
Rwanda Predicted XI: Niyigena, Mutsinzi, Manzi, Niyomugabo; Sahabo, Bizimana, Rubanguka; Rafael, Nshuti, Mugisha
Nigeria Predicted XI: Nwabali; Aina, Troost-Ekong, Bassey, Onyemaechi; Ndidi, Onyedika, Iwobi; Simon, Osimhen, Lookman
Match Prediction and Betting Tips
Nigeria have struggled to break down defensive teams in this qualification campaign, and they will need to be patient against a well organised Rwanda side. Given the history between these two teams and the low scoring nature of their past encounters, a tight contest is expected.
Our recommended bet for this match is Nigeria to win and under 2.5 goals. The Super Eagles should have enough quality to edge this game, but it is unlikely to be a high scoring affair. None of the previous meetings between these two teams have seen more than two goals, and Rwanda’s defensive record suggests that trend could continue.

Final Thoughts
This is a massive match for Nigeria as they look to keep their World Cup hopes alive. With a new coach, Osimhen back leading the line, and a point to prove, the Super Eagles should be able to grind out a much needed victory. However, Rwanda have proven to be tough opposition in the past, and they will not go down without a fight.
