The Premier League has rarely been short of drama, but genuine multi-team title races have been harder to come by in recent years.
Manchester City dominated much of the last decade before Liverpool and Arsenal broke their grip, and recent champions have generally separated themselves from the pack.
The 2026/27 Premier League season feels different.

There is also uncertainty surrounding Rodri, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid.
City still possess one of Europe’s strongest squads, but replacing arguably the greatest manager in Premier League history while potentially losing one of their most influential players makes them far less predictable than in previous seasons.
Liverpool Begin Again Under Iraola
Odds – 6.00
Liverpool are another giant beginning life under a new manager.
Andoni Iraola arrives after impressing with Bournemouth and now faces the challenge of turning Liverpool back into champions.
The Reds have quality throughout their squad, but there are questions to answer following an inconsistent 2025/26 campaign, particularly away from home.
Liverpool scored just five first-half away goals in the league last season and led only twice at half-time on their travels.
If Iraola can address those issues quickly, 6.00 could become an interesting price.
United Back in the Conversation
Odds – 7.00
Could Manchester United finally be ready to mount another title challenge?
Michael Carrick helped transform their fortunes after taking charge last season, with United eventually finishing third.
The challenge now is different. United played only 40 matches across all competitions last season, giving them considerably more preparation and recovery time than several rivals.
European football returns this season, increasing the demands on Carrick’s squad.
Their summer recruitment has attempted to address that, but United will also need to improve defensively after keeping clean sheets in just 21% of their Premier League matches last term.

Can Chelsea’s Spending Pay Off?

Tottenham might be much further out in the betting, but few clubs have transformed as dramatically this summer.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have spent heavily, including club-record deals for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, while Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have also arrived.
Spurs endured a disastrous league campaign last season, but their huge injury list certainly didn’t help.
Like Chelsea, they also have no European football to worry about.
A title challenge would represent an enormous turnaround, but Spurs look determined to make sure last season was an anomaly.
Could We Be Heading for Another 2015/16?
There is something strangely familiar about the uncertainty surrounding England’s biggest clubs.
Think back to 2015/16.
Chelsea’s title defence spectacularly collapsed. United were struggling under Louis van Gaal. Man City were inconsistent during Manuel Pellegrini’s final season. Liverpool changed manager midway through the campaign, while Arsenal and Tottenham ultimately failed to capitalise.
With the traditional giants all experiencing problems at the same time, Leicester City seized the opportunity and produced arguably the greatest title shock English football has ever seen.
Nobody is suggesting we’re guaranteed another 5,000/1 miracle.
But there is a parallel.
Five of the traditional big six begin 2026/27 with a different manager to the one who started last season. Arsenal are the exception, but they have lost Saliba for a significant period. Chelsea and Tottenham have spent fortunes attempting to transform themselves, while Manchester United suddenly look capable of competing again.
