Why This Is The Worst Man Utd Team In The EPL Era

Manchester United have had an extremely poor campaign so far.

The Red Devils are sixth in the English Premier League, 11 points off fourth. Despite their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, Man Utd were extremely poor in the first half, failing to register a shot while Liverpool had 13 in the first 35 minutes alone.

On Thursday, Erik ten Hag’s side found themselves with a 3-2 lead against Chelsea, but they failed to hold on to the win after two goals in the dying embers from Cole Palmer saw the Blues clinch all three points.

Here are some reasons to why this Man Utd team are the worst in the club’s EPL history:

Lack of leadership

Overall the years, Manchester United have been known for their leadership in the side, more specifically Roy Keane who could be deemed as the greatest ever captain the Premier League has seen.

Harry Maguire was stripped of captaincy in the summer, which left Bruno Fernandes with the armband, but the Portuguese midfielder has produced performances far from inspiring for the rest of his team mates this term.

No goals in the side

United have been poor on all accounts this term, but the most worrying part of their game has been in the final third, as there are just six sides in the English top flight that have scored less goals (45) than them.

When comparing the current attackers to those that they had in the 2007/08 season, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo made a combined total of 140 appearances where they scored an astonishing 79 goals and contributed with 29 assists, which is far superior to the current forwards stats.

Poor transfer strategy

The business made from United over the last 18 months has been extremely poor, with new signings such as Antony, Mason Mount and Casemiro failing to make the desired impact.

It seems like there has been no real structure as to who they bring into the club, with ageing players such as Casemiro being bought on long-term deals and players such as Antony who has not proven himself being signed for a staggering £85million. This has meant players haven’t fit into the club’s style of play leading to a lack of cohesion on the pitch which has been extremely evident this season.
