The World Cup is only a few days old, but we already have one of the standout group-stage fixtures.
France against Senegal brings back memories of 2002, when Senegal shocked the defending champions in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. I don’t think we’ll see a repeat tonight, but I do think Senegal will make life difficult for us.
That’s why I’ve built this 26.00 Bet Builder around a France win, but with Senegal playing their part in what should be an entertaining game.
My France vs Senegal Bet Builder (26.00)
- Over 7.5 corners
- Pape Alassane Gueye card
- Pape Alassane Gueye 2+ fouls
- El Hadji Malick Diouf 2+ fouls
- Kylian Mbappe 3+ shots
- Both teams to score
- France win
France Win & Both Teams To Score
France are rightly favourites, but I don’t see a comfortable clean sheet.
Both teams have scored in six of France’s last seven matches and Senegal have plenty of attacking quality through Sadio Mané, Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye. I think Senegal find a goal, but France’s attacking talent should ultimately be too much.
Kylian Mbappe 3+ Shots
Mbappe has recorded 3+ shots in 18 of his last 19 starts for France and is averaging an incredible 5.98 shots per 90 minutes across his last 14 international appearances.
He averaged 4.7 shots per game for Real Madrid last season and, as France’s main attacking outlet, I expect him to be heavily involved from the first whistle.
Pape Alassane Gueye To Be Carded
Senegal are going to spend long spells defending and Gueye will have a huge job trying to stop France’s midfield and attack from finding space.
The Villarreal midfielder picked up two yellow cards at AFCON, two more during qualifying, and was booked 12 times in 34 club starts last season.
Against players like Mbappe, Olise and Dembele, I can easily see him ending up in the referee’s notebook.
Pape Alassane Gueye 2+ Fouls
If Gueye gets booked, there’s a good chance this lands too.
He averages 2.5 fouls per 90 minutes across his last 10 matches and is exactly the type of midfielder who does the dirty work for Senegal.
Against a France side that likes to attack through the middle and in transition, I expect him to be busy.
El Hadji Malick Diouf 2+ Fouls
This is all about the matchup.
Diouf is likely to spend much of the game dealing with Michael Olise, one of the most direct dribblers in the tournament.
The Senegal full-back averaged 1.8 fouls per game at AFCON and committed six fouls across Senegal’s final two World Cup warm-up matches. With Olise constantly running at him, two fouls looks very achievable.
Over 7.5 Corners
This line feels low for two teams that attack so aggressively.
France create chances from all angles and Senegal are dangerous on the break. Both sides have pace out wide and players who constantly force defenders into blocks and clearances.
With action expected at both ends, I think the corner count comfortably clears this mark.
