I cannot remember a Ghana World Cup build-up feeling this uncertain.
Usually, even when expectations are not huge, there is still excitement and belief around the Black Stars. This time, there is tension. Changing manager so close to the tournament shocked a lot of people back home, especially because the squad still has real attacking talent.
At the same time, though, World Cups can change everything very quickly.
And Ghana has always been a team capable of chaos, good or bad.
? Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 28-man squad for the #BlackStars training camp in Cardiff, ahead of the international friendly against Wales.

How Ghana Reached the World Cup
- Qualification record: 8W-1L-1D
- Goals for / against: 23 / 6
- Top scorer: Jordan Ayew (7)
- Top assists: Jordan Ayew (7)
Qualification actually went far more smoothly than people remember.
Ghana comfortably topped the group and scored goals regularly, with Jordan Ayew surprisingly becoming the key figure creatively and as a goalscorer.
The problem is that confidence completely collapsed afterwards.
Heavy defeats in friendlies against Austria and Germany created panic around the national team, and suddenly the entire mood around Ghana changed before the tournament even began.
Ghana’s Group Fixtures
- Ghana vs Panama – 17 June – Toronto, Canada
- England vs Ghana – 23 June – New England, USA
- Croatia vs Ghana – 27 June – Philadelphia, USA
The Panama game is absolutely massive.
Win that and suddenly Ghana probably only need one more result to have a chance of progressing. Lose it, and the pressure before England becomes enormous.
And honestly, every Ghana fan immediately looked for the England fixture when the draw came out anyway.
Why Ghana Could Still Surprise People
The attack is far better than people realise.
If Antoine Semenyo catches fire at this tournament, Ghana suddenly become dangerous because there is pace, power, and directness everywhere in the frontline.
Then you add Mohammed Kudus, Abdul Fatawu, Jordan Ayew, and potentially even Inaki Williams from the bench, and there are definitely goals in this team.
The issue is whether Ghana can stay organised enough defensively to allow those players to decide matches.
Under Carlos Queiroz, the approach will definitely be far more cautious and structured.
Players Who Will Define Our Tournament
Everything revolves around Semenyo now.
The move to Manchester City completely changed how people view him globally, but Ghana fans already knew how dangerous he could become. This feels like the tournament where he can properly announce himself to the world.

I’m also really excited to watch Kudus – assuming he returns from injury. When he’s confident, he plays football like he’s in a street game. He brings unpredictability Ghana desperately need.
And quietly, I think Thomas Partey’s experience will be crucial because Ghana’s midfield still needs leadership when matches become difficult.
The Tactical Questions
The biggest concern is clearly the defence.
There’s no point pretending otherwise. Ghana have quality attackers, but once you go deeper into the team, the drop-off becomes obvious compared to the strongest nations at the tournament.
Goalkeeper is also a concern.
Against elite sides like England or potentially France later on, Ghana will probably spend long periods defending, which means concentration levels have to be perfect.
The good news is that Queiroz knows exactly how to organise underdog teams at World Cups.
The bad news is that Ghana probably need things to become ugly sometimes to survive.
What Ghana Expects This Summer
Most Ghana fans are nervous more than confident.
There is definitely talent in this squad, but the timing of the managerial change and the poor recent performances have damaged belief heading into the tournament.
I think most supporters would honestly accept reaching the knockout stage as a successful World Cup, especially considering how difficult the group is.
But if Ghana start well against Panama, the mood around the country could completely change overnight because football emotion moves quickly in Ghana.
Kofi’s Predicted Ghana XI

CM: Kwasi Sibo

My Expectation for Ghana
Honestly, I think Ghana are one of the hardest teams at the tournament to predict.
If the squad buys into Queiroz quickly and the attack clicks, Ghana absolutely have enough quality to escape the group.
But if confidence drops early or defensive mistakes creep in, things could unravel very quickly too.
That’s why this team feels dangerous and worrying at the same time.
