Meet Your World Cup Portugal Fan Voice: Sofia Amaro

Who Am I?

I’m Sofia Amaro, 30, from Faro in the Algarve, and a proud S.C. Farense supporter. If you haven’t heard of us, I don’t blame you, we were relegated from the top division last year, which probably tells you everything about what following my club is like. Although one of my favourite players of all time, Christian Irobiso, is Nigerian!

Why I’m Here with Bet9ja

Bet9ja reached out ahead of the tournament because they wanted real fans to give their perspective on the biggest football nations.

Portugal is an interesting one. On paper, we’ve had some of the best players in the world for years, but following the national team has rarely felt straightforward.

That’s what I’ll be bringing here.

Why I’m Worth Listening To

Following Portugal for years probably made me a more cautious bettor than most. We’ve had so many talented teams that looked incredible on paper and still found ways to disappoint, so I’ve learned to focus more on matchups and tournament situations rather than just names.

Growing Up with Portugal

Following Portugal at World Cups has mostly been about frustration.

2006 was the exception. That team had something about it, and reaching the semi-finals felt like the start of something bigger. But after that, it’s been disappointment after disappointment.

What made it harder was having Cristiano Ronaldo. For so many years, we had the best player in the world, and it always felt like we had to make it count on the biggest stage.

Yes, we won UEFA Euro 2016, and that was incredibly special, but for most fans, the World Cup is the one that really defines a generation.

Now somehow, Ronaldo is set to play his sixth World Cup at 41. No one else has even reached five. That alone tells you everything about him.

How I See Portugal Right Now

This tournament is going to be about balance.

There will always be outside voices saying Ronaldo is too old, but he still delivers. Thirteen goals in his last thirteen games for Portugal, including leading the team to the Nations League title against Spain last summer, is not something you ignore.

At the same time, this team has evolved beyond just relying on him.

The midfield might be the strongest in the tournament. Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Joao Neves and Vitinha give Portugal control, creativity, and energy.

Under Roberto Martinez, there is more structure to the team, and it feels like Portugal finally have a proper base to build from rather than just moments of brilliance. The question is whether it all comes together at the right time.

What I’ll Be Bringing

I’ll be following Portugal from now through the tournament, focusing on how this team evolves, how Ronaldo is managed, and where the betting value sits as things develop.

I tend to like possession-based markets, player passes and assists, Bet Builders, and anytime goalscorer bets, especially when Portugal are controlling games through midfield.
